• Environment - circular economy
  • Circularity in action at FM Conway

VINCI Construction is already putting circularity principles into practice at its worksites – as recycling, reusing and re-engineering materials are helping to step up performance in the construction sector and contributing to its ongoing ecological transition. In the United Kingdom, for instance, our subsidiary FM Conway is reshaping road construction and maintenance with groundbreaking sustainable methods.

FM Conway and VINCI Construction join forces to advance sustainability

VINCI Construction completed the acquisition of FM Conway, a British infrastructure specialist and circular economy pioneer, in January 2025. One of FM Conway’s distinctive strengths is its integrated model, which enables it to recycle 98% of its roadwork waste – including asphalt and aggregates – through a network of processing plants and river and rail terminals. This setup is a perfect fit for VINCI Construction, and now enables us to provide sustainable, circular solutions on a larger scale.

The closed-loop model

FM Conway’s self-delivery system involves handling inspection, production, laying and waste management in-house. This approach enables full traceability of materials – and supplies the company with a steady stream of high-quality, low-carbon recycled materials.

With this circular model, FM Conway:

– Recycles 98% of its roadwork waste
– Diverts 100% of its construction waste from landfill
– Reuses water to wash aggregates and produce concrete

It also trains all its crew members, machinery operators, lorry drivers and management teams to use resources more efficiently and to help reduce our carbon footprint.

Innovation on site in Westminster

A project that FM Conway started up in Westminster in 2024 includes a variety of trailblazing features:

  • SureLayer® E, an 85% recycled (reclaimed asphalt pavement and aggregate) warm mix
  • 40% lower carbon emissions than hot-mix asphalt
  • 55% less heavy-vehicle traffic
  • Single-layer resurfacing, limiting disruptions and shortening operation timeframes

This project – a first for London’s road network – demonstrates that high-performance recycled asphalt is a viable option.

Building sustainable, PAS 2080-certified infrastructure

FM Conway has secured PAS 2080:2023 certification for its carbon management throughout the infrastructure life cycle, and its strategy is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (notably the ones relating to responsible consumption and the climate). It is building on both these foundations to scale up its circular approach across its business lines while embedding innovative solutions, which it handles entirely in-house, throughout the value chain.

The circular economy: breaking new ground and delivering results

With FM Conway, we reaffirm our commitment to more environmentally responsible construction. Recycling materials on a massive scale, switching to warm-mix asphalt and optimising logistics are now powerful levers to step up performance and efficiency while curbing environmental impact.
