Preserving water resources with W.M.I.
VINCI Construction’s subsidiary W.M.I. (Water Management International) has been applying its expertise to optimise drinking water networks and reduce losses worldwide since 1989 – and is bringing our pledge to preserve natural resources and advance sustainable development to life.
Reducing water losses in networks to save resources
Non-revenue water (NRW) – caused by leaks, theft or faulty metering – accounts for up to 50% of all water conveyed in some cities. And reducing and managing NRW is W.M.I.’s core expertise: it follows a methodical approach, which it tailors to each city, to pinpoint losses and fix them.
Its performance audits, water system modelling, state-of-the-art instrumentation and support services for operators save millions of cubic metres of water every year.
In Cali Colombia, for example, W.M.I. significantly reduced losses and as a result brought safe, reliable water supplies to an additional 300,000-plus residents without tapping into new resources. In Arequipa, Peru, it rolled out an ambitious pilot project, in partnership with France’s Ministry of the Economy and Finance, to permanently stabilise the water network’s performance amid growing water stress.
Smart networks for sustainable water management
W.M.I. is harnessing data technologies to take the next step. In Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, it oversaw the installation of a next-generation distribution network including more than 200,000 metering points.
The new network’s SCADA (automation and supervision) systems, real-time telemetry, equipment geolocation and remote meter reading capabilities now provide operators with an array of powerful tools to anticipate issues, adapt pressure and detect invisible leaks.
This smart water approach is optimising available resources and improving service quality while reducing impacts on natural environments.
A combination of technical expertise, training and assistance
W.M.I. invariably includes training, coaching and skill-building in its projects to enable operators to become self-reliant over the long term.
Its engineers and technicians work hand in hand with local operators to help them make the most of the tools, sharpen their focus on performance and enable them to manage water resources proactively. Its approach to knowledge-sharing stems from its commitment to building local skills, which is one of the pillars of its broader CSR policy.
W.M.I. meets the most stringent international requirements, including the International Water Association’s standards, to ensure the quality, safety and transparency of its operations.
Taking natural resource preservation to the next level
W.M.I.’s targeted action is turning VINCI Construction’s pledge to preserve resources into tangible results. Every litre of water it saves is a team win. Reducing losses, upgrading networks and training local players are all helping to build a more responsible and sustainable water sector.
