Taxiways at the Zanzibar airport

The growth of tourism in the Zanzibar archipelago has repeatedly made it necessary to expand the airport on Unguja Island.

Sogea-Satom carried out the refurbishment and extension works on the existing aircraft aprons and taxiways at the Zanzibar airport under a contract awarded by the Tanzanian government.

An additional taxiway was built to connect with the runway extended by the Sogea-Satom teams in 2009. The goal is to continue to upgrade the airport and build a new 70,000 sq. metre aircraft apron to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft.

The work, which took 21 months to complete, has a value of €35 million.

This is the company’s second contract in the archipelago, a major tourist destination off the coast near the capital of Dar es Salaam, following renovation of the runway in record time in 2009
