Croix-Rousse Tunnel, Lyon, France

Buses, bicycles and pedestrians safely use Europe’s longest tunnel dedicated to green transport modes, which runs under the Croix-Rousse hill.

The Croix-Rousse tunnel, inaugurated on 5 December 2013, is Europe’s longest (1,753-metre) tunnel dedicated to green transport modes (buses, bicycles and pedestrians). The project covered construction of the new tunnel and structural renovation of the existing tunnel.

The works also included provision of a video display in the green mode tube as well as design and installation of a hypervision information system for all five Greater Lyon tunnels. The project’s strong focus on communication reflects its urban environment, conventional tunnel construction method and need to interrupt and re-route road traffic.
