Atlantic Bridge, Colón, Panama

A huge cable-stayed bridge spans the Panama Canal.

Three kilometres north of the Gatun locks, the Atlantic Bridge will enable automobile traffic to cross the Panama Canal independently of lock operation.

The structure being built by VINCI Construction Grands Projets defies the laws of gravity and is one of the world’s longest cable-stayed concrete bridges. With a 530-metre central span, 212.5-meter towers and 75-metre clearance, it will allow the largest Post-Panamax container ships to pass under it. Freyssinet is responsible for prestressing design, supply and installation and for the cable stay system.

Construction methods were designed to ensure that container ship traffic, a crucial resource for the country, never needs to be interrupted during the works.
