VINCI Construction Grands Projects is carrying out the design-build construction of the new Assiut Barrage on the Nile that will replace an existing dam dating back to the early 20th century.

The new dam will have four 8 MW turbines. It will have double locks to allow navigation on the Nile and is designed to maintain a head of 4 metres to ensure discharge of a minimum 445 m3/s flow into the Ibrahimia Canal to irrigate nearly 700,000 hectares of land between the dam and Cairo.

Work started in May 2012 and will take 64 months to complete.
